Agile Mangabey Name Origin

Cercocebus Agilis

The name of the agile mangabey likely stems from its ability to move swiftly[2] across its habitat. For instance, they have often been observed to chase and hunt relatively fast-moving species such as squirrels, mice, and more.

Agile Mangabey Characteristics

Agile Mangabey

The Agile Mangabey[1] is another Old-World monkey of the White-Eylid Mangabey group mainly found in swampy forests.

  • Except for the tail region, the fur of agile mangabeys is a brownish-gray agouti, darkening on the back.
  • The Agile Mangabey’s tail is agouti only at the base of the fur. The fur tips are usually black on the dorsal side of the body. The entire underside is a light reddish-brown.
  • The Head’s hair radiates from a pattern of spirals above the forehead. The bare skin of the hands, feet, ears, and face are entirely black except for the upper eyelids. Baby Agile Mangabeys have lighter skin at first but darkens with age.
  • In the wild, the agile mangabeys can live up to 20 years.
  • They are social animals, so they believe in moving around with their mates.
  • The agile mangabey is a relatively fast animal and usually covers a range of around 4 to 6 kms.
  • These swift monkeys spend the majority of their times guarding their territories using their specialized vocal sac.
  • Due to habitat loss, mangabeys are now listed as endangered, both male and female.
