Editorial Standards

BioExplorer has published independent biology reference content since 1999. Our editorial standards define how every article on this site is produced from initial research to final publication and ongoing updates. These standards apply to all content published under the BioExplorer name, regardless of topic or format.

Who We Are

BioExplorer is an independent biology reference site staffed by credentialed science professionals. Our writers hold doctoral, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in biology and related life sciences. Our editorial team reviews all content before publication. We do not publish content produced by unverified contributors or anonymous sources.

Full team credentials are listed on our About page.

Source Standards

Every factual claim published on BioExplorer must be traceable to at least one primary or authoritative source. Acceptable sources include:

  • Peer-reviewed scientific literature indexed in PubMed, Web of Science, or Google Scholar
  • IUCN Red List species data and conservation assessments
  • Smithsonian Institution publications and databases
  • WWF conservation reports and species profiles
  • National Geographic Society scientific publications
  • Government scientific agencies including USGS, NOAA, NASA, and NIH
  • Established academic textbooks published by university presses

We do not accept Wikipedia, general interest websites, or unattributed claims as primary sources. Where a claim originates from a secondary source, our writers are required to trace it to the original primary literature before citing it.

Writer Standards

All BioExplorer writers are required to:

  • Hold a verifiable academic credential in a biology or life science discipline
  • Research every article from primary sources before writing
  • Cite sources inline or in a reference section at the foot of each article
  • Disclose any potential conflict of interest relevant to the subject matter
  • Submit articles for editorial review before publication

Writers’ credentials are published on their author profile pages and verifiable through their linked professional profiles.

Subject Matter Accuracy

BioExplorer covers a broad range of biology topics including animal biology, plant science, cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolutionary biology, microbiology, and the history of science. For each subject area:

  • Articles covering taxonomy and species classification follow current ICZN and ICBN nomenclature standards
  • Conservation status information is sourced directly from IUCN Red List assessments
  • Medical or health-adjacent biology content is reviewed against published clinical or scientific literature
  • Historical claims are verified against documented scientific record

Tone and Accessibility

BioExplorer content is written for a general educated audience, including students, educators, and science enthusiasts. We write in plain English without sacrificing scientific accuracy. Technical terms are defined when first used. We do not oversimplify to the point of inaccuracy, and we do not sensationalize claims beyond what the primary literature supports.

Commercial Independence

BioExplorer editorial decisions are made independently of commercial relationships. Advertisers and sponsors have no influence over article content, topic selection, or editorial conclusions. Sponsored content, if published, is clearly labeled as such and held to the same factual accuracy standards as editorial content.

AI Policy

BioExplorer does not publish AI-generated content as finished articles. Our writers may use AI tools for research assistance or initial drafting, but all published content must be substantially written, reviewed, and verified by a credentialed human author before publication. Final editorial review by a human editor is required for all articles.

Updates and Accuracy

Science evolves. When new research contradicts or significantly updates information published on BioExplorer, we revise the relevant article. All “last updated” timestamps reflect genuine content revisions. Our full update and corrections process is described in our Corrections Policy.
